Friendly Campus – University of Windsor

Omar Patwari, Bangladesh

Omar Patwari, an international student from Bangladesh, arrived at the University of Windsor campus carrying 60 KGs of luggage. His on-campus residence was only a short walk from where the taxi had dropped him off but even the smallest of distance can be impossible with four suitcases. Luckily, a man noticed Omar’s heavy load and offered to help him carry the luggage.

“It turned out he was an engineering professor at the University,” said Omar. “He ended up being one of my professors in my first year.”

Omar found out really quick that this was a very friendly campus. He is now in his fourth year in Electrical engineering with Telecommunications Option at the University of Windsor.

Each year, the Engineering Student Society (ENGSOC) participates in the Ontario Engineering Competitions (OEC); where students form the entire province compete for first place in engineering design and communications. Omar was one of 12 students representing the University of Windsor at OEC2006.

Omar is also active in the University’s student body. He is a Public Relations Officer for the International Student Society. When asked about his experiences with students from diverse cultural backgrounds, Omar said.

“I have so many friends from so many different countries that if I want to experience a different country, I just go to my friend’s house!”

After graduation, Omar plans to put his engineering degree to work for a few years and then pursue an MBA.
